Lawrence, KS - Starfire HQ - Starfire Technologies attended IBM's announcement of Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) v5.5 on November 15, 2007. TSM 5.5 improves TSM's scalability, ease of administration, and security of backup data. Below is a sample of the most salient enhancements in the new update:
- Integrated approach to protecting VMware with VMware Consolidated Backup
- Fast, non-disruptive backups with Microsoft Exchange 2007 Volume Shadow Copy Service support
- Broader support for application snapshots with:
- Tivoli Storage Manager for Advanced Copy Services additional device and operating system support for DB2 snapshots
- Tivoli Storage Manager for Copy Services VSS support for Microsoft SQL Server
- Backup, archive, and space management support for AIX Workload Partitions
The enhancements provided by v5.5 should help improve the productivity of IT staff and increase the security of backup data.
VMware Consolidated Backup Integration
TSM now integrates with VMware Consolidated Backup. This enhancement enables consistent backups of VMware environments and eliminates the need to use any manual scripts that may have been used in the past. Additionally, there is better recovery and transparent management of backup data on the TSM server. Virtual machine data can now be backed up as if a TSM client was running on the virtual machine itself.
TSM for Mail v5.5 and Microsoft Exchange 2007 VSS Support
TSM for Mail v5.5 supports online (hot) backup and utilizes the backup-certified interfaces provided by Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange. This enhancement improves the protection of the data and the performance of backups and restores. TSM for mail creates a copy of the Exchange server storage group databases along with the associated transaction logs. This module can produce the different types of backups specified by the Microsoft API including, full and incremental backups, differential backups, copy backups, and database copy backups.
- TSM for Mail exploits Exchange 2007 VSS features to enable:
- Local Continuous Replication (LCR) VSS backups
- Cluster Continuous Replication (CCR) VSS backups
- Recovery Storage Group Restore from VSS backups
- Alternate Storage Group Restore from VSS backups
Support for Application Snapshots
IBM is integrating hardware and software-based snapshot capabilities with TSM and its data protection components for Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL, IBM DB2, UDB, Oracle, and SAP. The application snapshot enhancement will help leverage the performance, scheduling, and media management functions of TSM and ensure application servers are operational 24 x 7.
Advance Copy Services for DB2
Advance Copy Services v5.5 is enhanced to support DB2 on NFS attached to N series and enable frequent, space efficient snapshots of DB2 data. Additionally, DB2 on Linux is now supported by TSM for Advanced Copy Services.
Snapshot Support for Microsoft SQL
TSM Copy Services is designed to eliminate the backup window for large SQL databases and reduce the backup load (I/O, memory, CPU) on the production server by shifting the load to another server.
Backup, archive, and space management support for AIX Workload Partitions (WPAR)
AIX 6.1 includes a new, software-based, virtualization approach (workload partitioning) that complements the existing IBM System Logical Partitions. This enhancement reduces the number of operating system images that have to be managed when consolidating workloads. With WPAR for AIX, administrators are able to consolidate multiple applications inside a single running instance of AIX 6.1.
TSM v5.5 Support for WPAR Enables:
- Backup and restore of local partition files data within the global partition using the local partition namespace available within the global partition
- Migration and transparent recall of local partition file data - JFS2 and GPFS within the global partition
- Storage and retrieval of application data using TSM APIs supported from global partition
Starfire Technologies maintains an ongoing commitment to providing up to date premium TSM services. Please feel free to contact us for any questions you may have.
